Thousand Islands (USA)
The United States side of the Thousand Islands is known for its summer homes of the rich and famous. For example, you can see the summer homes of Irving Berlin and Kate Smith here.
The most ambitious project on any island on the US side is, of course, Boldt Castle. Many people visit the castle from Alexandria Bay. From Gananoque, you can now visit the castle only on certain cruises. A few years ago, you could disembark onto Heart Island from one cruise boat and continue the cruise on another. But too many people waited for the final cruise of the day, and the boat line changed their schedule. Now, the 3 hour cruise simply circles the island without stopping.
The St. Lawrence Seaway runs through the US side of the islands, and so you might see a few ocean-going ships in this part of the region.
Suspension bridges cross the river on both sides. A series of bridges crosses the river to Hill Island on the Canadian side. A short bridge takes traffic from Hill Island to Wellesley Island. Finally, the second large suspension bridge connects Wellesley Island with the New York state mainland.
