Gananoque

Gananoque is known as the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". It is a pleasant town of about 5000 people, 30km east of Kingston. In the above photo, the tower at the left is the clock tower built in 1903. The large building in the center is St. John's Roman Catholic Church. Behind, is the steeple of Grace United Church (1871). To the right is the steeple of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. The bridge crosses the mouth of the Gananoque River.

From the docks along the St. Lawrence River, you can take advantage of a cruise through the Thousand Islands. Or you can hire a boat and guide and go fishing in the river, known for its northern pike, muskellunge, bass, and yellow perch.

But after taking the cruise, be sure to stroll through the town. There are several craft and antique shops worth visiting, as well as the picturesque park at the town hall and the sculpture park alongside the Gananoque River.
