Guildwood Day 2004
June 5 was a beautiful day for the 2004 Guildwood Day, with mild temperatures and generally sunny sky. Guildwood Day has one of Scarborough's smaller community parades, but participation seemed better than average this year.
The day proceeded as usual. To start, there was a pancake breakfast at the Presbyterian Church. Then the parade, starting around 10:20AM from the front of Laurier CI. The parade went up Guildwood Parkway, through the parking lot of the Extendicare, and returned back down Guildwood Parkway. The parade then turned down Livingston Road, and ended at the back of the high school, where festivities continued into the afternoon.
Balloon animals were very everywhere, with swords, hats and animals popular with the kids. Other activities for the kids included a sack race, a three-legged race, face painting, pony rides, and a small petting zoo.
Since a federal election campaign is well underway, the candidates had to make an appearance. Incumbent John McKay, Tom Varesh, and Sheila White all rode cars at the front of the parade. It's certainly not unreasonable for the candidates to make themselves available to the voters at an event like this. But the display put on by Varesh's team seemed too much, with supporters marching with several large banners. An event like this simply should not be over-politicized like that.
It should also be noted that several of Varesh's cohorts were wearing Belinda Stronach, Newmarket-Aurora, T-shirts. So it would appear that not only did the Conservative Party want to put on a strong showing for Varesh, but that they also had to parachute in campaign workers from another riding to do so! |
