Guildwood Day 2008
June 7, 2008, was the second day of the first big heat wave of the summer, with a temperature over 30C. Since this was the 50th anniversary of Guildwood Village, this was supposed to be a bigger than normal Guildwood Day. But overall, I'm not sure if it lived up to the advance hype. The day included all the usual events we've gotten used to, including games and bouncy castles for the kids, barbecue, reptile display, petting zoo, pony rides and vendors. Here are a few photos of some of the activities. 
The parade had the usual features, a bagpipe band, an old fire truck, and usual horde of kids on decorated bikes. The usual politicians were there, John McKay, Margarett Best, and Paul Ainslie, as well as past municipal counciller David Soknacki, who seems to want to stay in the public eye. Perhaps it was just the hot weather, but it looked like there were fewer kids in the parade than normal. 
New for this year's celebration was a model street railway layout on display in a gymnasium in the high school. If the Guildwood Day organizers want to make this a Guildwood Day tradition, then perhaps I should rejuvenate my old N-scale layout and put it out for display too! 
This year, the barbecue was organized by the local Anglican church. Although the service was slow, it was good to see the Anglican church at Guildwood Day. We've lived in Guildwood Village for 13 years, and this is probably the first time I've seen that church participating in a community event. 
New this year was a horse-drawn wagon. During the parade, it carried the Dixieland band. But later, it took people on trips around the high school. The popular ride took passengers onto Guildwood Parkway and Livingston Road, much to the consternation of motorists. |
