Rainbow Bridge

Rainbow Bridge.

There are a number of bridges crossing the Niagara River. The Rainbow Bridge crosses the river within sight of the Falls, carrying cars and pedestrians between Niagara Falls Ontario and Niagara Falls New York.

The bridge is owned and operated by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. It was built in 1941 to replace the Upper Steel Arch Bridge. At the time, it was the longest hingeless arch in the world, at 286m.

The Aviary, at the Rainbow Bridge.

One great new attraction, built after our previous visit, is the Aviary. In several rooms, you can see dozens of species of birds flying about. A brochure can help you identify the birds, and you can check off the ones you spot. One highlight of the Aviary is a room where you can purchase a small cup of nectar which you can feed to Australian Lorikeets landing on your arms.

What's the significance of "Rainbow" in the name of the bridge? On a sunny day, it's not difficult to see a rainbow in the mist over the falls. I took the following photo around 6PM, with the sun behind me.
