Great website. Love the pictures of my hometown Sault Ste Marie. I was looking at the site about the AY Jackson Spring On The Onaping River. This painting was stolen from a school in Sudbury back in the mid 70's. When I was a child (8 or 9 years) I was in the Sudbury area picking blueberries with my family and I came across a hole in the ground that had a picture frame and a bunch of towels in it. The brass plaque on the frame said "Spring On The Onaping River" by A.Y. Jackson. My mother knew what it was right away and we called police to let them know that we had found the frame. Imagine how exciting this all was for an 8 year old kid.

I still wonder who's got that painting. I don't believe it was ever found.

Beautiful pictures and comments of the Polar Bear Express trip from Cochrane Ontario to Moose Factory. I just went this past July with a group from Orchard View Travelers - a great trip for anyone. Fantastic scenery - travel back in time away from big city life. Very interesting = gives you something to think about. Thanks

I lived in Hawk Junction as a child and went thru that 2 room shcoolhouse that was mentioned.....so good to see some old sites .I remember the old hotel and I think it was Atkinson's that owned it then. We also had a new Red Cross Hospital built while i was there.....it impressed me to become a nurse when I got older. My Father worked for the ACR at the old Station....3 boxcars together............now you know it was awhile ago.

Just fun to reminicse! Thanks for the memories!!

An interesting site. I lived in Moosonee in the 60's; before TV or computers to those that find it boring, and it is still the source of some of my greatest memories. I'd love to go back for a visit but I'm disabled now which makes travelling kind of tough. I was emailing a girl in Moose Factory trying to locate a Loutitt somewhere in the James Bay, but lost her email address when I moved and bought a new computer. Anyone with any info., or who just wants to talk about 'way back when' can contact me at:thebacha@yahoo.com. It may seem inconvenient to have to use the train etc, but it's the best way to protect your land! Masi/Meegwitch

In response to Jean Marc Prevost's comments:

I know that Moosonee isn't the BEST place to live, but maybe you would have liked it better if you weren't such a holy terror. I met you personally a couple of times, and have heard so many stories about what a brat you were/are.

You didn't like Moosonee because the people didn't like you, because you always thought you were too good. But you aren't.

Moosonee is okay to live in, but what is highly needed is a road or highway linking it to the rest of civilization. If there was? we could have many cottages by the lakes and rivers that are flourishing in this area. We could easily take the family camping without having to take trains, boats or skidoos...we could easily drive with our trucks or campers! Further, there would be so much more socio-economic development up here and we would definitely have more services such as restaurants, mcdonalds, tim hortons, mall, theatre, gas stations, college/university, and there would definitely be more housing/apartments made available, employment opportunities, related services, etc..the potential and opportunites are endless. Personally,I think Moosonee and surrounding communities would really benefit from this highway/change. Overall, I think the north has alot to offer...and a highway would definitely create a postive impact for all of us. What you think people?

This town is sickening...theres nothing but drunks and coke users in this town. everyone pretneds to be happy but they are all miserable. It's an isolated miserable community to visit or to live in. That's the truth. The only people who have good things to say about it are the one's who have the jobs and are laughing happy.

Hey all,

I was just reading posts " One memory is going to the movie (Old Yellar). We had an intermission while they mounted the next reel of film." I had a chuckle...because Pam and I were probably watching the same movie at the same time. They used to show the movies at the Father Belledeau Center. I remember those days... the canteen used to be at the back. Anyway, the movie was one of my fav's as a kid.

I am originally from Moose Factory, and am now living in New Brunswick.

Searching for an wood carving made by one of the local carver's of the HomeMaker's Club, in Moosonee Ontario. Back in the late 80's. They were wood sleds made to look like they were packed with other items. Were sold to the tourists who visited Moosonee by arriving on the POLAR BEAR EXPRESS TRAIN. I was born and raised in Sault Ste Marie, Canada and Immigrated to the States back in the early 60's. Especially at this time of year I go back to my roots and remember being shipped off to Hawk Junction from the Sault during summer vacations from elementary school to stay with my Aunt and Uncle in Hawk Junction. I remember the summers and picking blueberries taking the short cut to swim in the lake, listening to the radio in the evening with my aunt (my Uncle worked on the ACR as a train conductor). I wish there were more pictures of the area NE of the Hotel up the hill which is where her home was located she is dead now almost 30 years and I am in my late fifty's what a wonderful site to stumble accross and take me back to my childhood. Thank you

My husdand and I used to live there in the late 60s and early 70s and also have many family members living there. The pictures are great - keep up the good work. I also used to live in Sault Ste. There is a Wonderful place to visit that you may be interested in. It's a huge piece of property called "Midlothian" on a sideroad running south out of Magnetawan, Ontario. Ask any local and they can tell you exactly how to get there. It's owned by an Art teacher, Peter Camani, who may or may not still teach at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School in South River, ON (He was one of my Art teachers when I went to school there). He does amazing concrete sculptures, most 15-20 feet high, and he has them placed all over his property. The theme is one of Halloween and ghosts. You start seeing the sculptures out in the fields as you are driving on the road. His residence is presented as a Medieval castle and you can tour part of his house as well as the the entire property. It's very, very cool. There are literally hundreds of these statues all over his property. It's well worth the drive to see this. Donations are welcome, if you wish.

I grew up in Moosonee until I was 18...now that I am so far away from there, I miss it very much...it's quite the place to be...you'd have to be hard as nails to live there though...the reality of a place like that is it is filled with so much negativity, it obvious to recognize to an outsider and it's oblivious to an insider...although I know that I could never live up there again...moosonee is where my roots are and I hold strong to that...one day I'll come home again for good...probably only as my last resting place...meegwetch

Thanks for sharing information on Northern Ontario. Two years ago we came up on a lark with no planning. It turned out to be one of the best memories after 20 years of summer vacations as a family. We made good friends with a family from St. Catherines on the Agawa Canyon train tour, ended up the next day at Pancake Bay to camp with them. This year we bring with us friends to tour again the Canadian Lake Superior coast. Swim, kayak, relax, enjoy pristine beach beauty and sunsets, hike, bike, sightsee, shop, read, sleep in a hammock, pick your enjoyment! We are very grateful for your sharing the wonderful possiblities that await us once again. One more week and we are on our way to heaven!

I remember Moosonee and Moose Factory from the two visits in the 50's. My aunt and uncle lived in Moosonee for years (Jack and Marie Ridd). My uncle worked for 2 Bay Enterprises and my aunt helped (or actually) started the hospital on Moose Factory. They had a cabin on Saw Pit island which they moved during the winter to Moosonee. I have lots of pictures from my visit. One memory is going to the movie (Old Yellar). We had an intermission while they mounted the next reel of film. I also remember the bugs (black flies). It was all great fun. I still have a jacket the my aunt bought in the 50's from the Hudson's Bay company.

As a resident of Moose Factory it was nice to come across this site and view pictures of people who have lived here for several years. The island is quite isolated but enjoyable for ones who enjoy the outdoor life especially if you can handle the dry cold winters and the fierce north winds that we sometimes experience. There is so much history here that sometimes the residents of Moose Factory tend to forget and its nice to see others point of view of the place which my family and I call home.

Last time I was in WAWA was in 1971 and we went to the movie house before flying into Lochalsh for a week. Played golf at a campground or adjacent to it, took the train to Goudreua...marveled at the ruins of the iron ore smelters...found out it had 10,000 people turn of the century. All in all it was one my most fantastic episodes and i've been worldwide. What wonderful people.
