Ottawa's Byward Market- Click on the thumbnail to see the full photo. - When I was growing up, Ottawa was just a two hour drive away. Even though it was so close, we didn't often go there. Even when I did visit, I didn't always bring my camera. These photos of Ottawa's Byward Market were taken in June of 1979. The market has changed a bit since then. Established in 1827, the market is the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in Canada. The market was named after the old By Ward in the city of Ottawa, which itself was named after Colonel John By, who originally surveyed the area. (By was also responsible for the construction of the Rideau Canal.) |
