University Avenue is a broad street with trees along the boulevard. University Avenue at Dundas Street is home to a number of insurance companies and hospitals.
Gladys Marie Smith was born in 1893 near this spot at the corner of University Avenue and Elm Street. She first appeared on stage in Toronto at the age of five. She acted on Broadway in 1907, when she took the name "Mary Pickford". Her film career started two years later with the film "Her First Biscuits". She would appear in more than fifty films, and in 1929 earned an Academy Award as best actress in the film Coquette.
