Summerhill
Here's where the CP main line crosses Yonge Street, just south of the Summerhill subway station. In 1915, Canadian Pacific built this passenger station in anticipation of significant passenger traffic. Note the clock tower, designed after the Campanile in Venice.
However, after the opening of Union Station downtown in 1927, this uptown station never saw much use, and the station closed two years later. To add to the ignominy, this building then housed both a beer store and a liquor store. The liquor store is still there, but closed recently to begin restoration efforts. Already, workers have removed the false ceiling, and have uncovered five old brass ticket wickets. By next year, the renovation should be complete, and the building may recover its former glory.
The Rosedale Diner is a pleasant place for lunch. |
