West Queen West
Forget about Queen Street West between University and Spadina. That area became popular in the late seventies due to the presence of a community of artists. However, the popularity drove the artists out as rents increased. But the artists didn't move far. As you walk west along Queen Street, keep moving until you get past Spadina. Watch for the ants crawling along the front of the Cameron House. A block later you'll finally find the first of a couple of good used book stores.
Those who think they're trendy hang out at Queen and John. Those who really are, can be found on Queen Street west of Spadina.
Jeff Healey is one of the more popular musicians in Toronto, renowned for his expertise in the blues guitar. I first saw him perform on an outdoor stage in the Queen Street West neighborhood, where he played Oh Canada in the style of Jimi Hendrix. Blind since birth, Healey never saw how the guitar is normally played, and so when he started to play, he played with the guitar on his lap fingering the strings from above. |
