Don Mills Train Wreck

July 14, 1987, Don Mills, Ontario, Canada

I was having lunch at work when I noticed quite a few emergency vehicles drive by. When I returned to my office on the eighth floor, I could see what the fuss was all about - a derailment on the CP main line right besides our building! A few of the diesel locomotives were off the tracks, and a large number of boxcars were arranged neatly right next to each other perpendicular to the tracks.

I returned after work to take pictures. Much of the track was torn up and railway crews were busy cleaning up the mess.

This accident could have been much worse. If it happened a few seconds later, locomotives and box cars would have fallen off a bridge onto Don Mills Road. A few seconds earlier, and they would have fallen onto the Don Valley Parkway. Furthermore, tanker cars at the end of the end of the train stayed on the tracks.
