The chipmunk is common, but not always very obvious, in Southern Ontario woods. Although shy, they are more noticable by their high-pitched chirp. It is a variety of North American squirrel, but smaller and with prominent stripes along the back.
Although they are normally shy creatures, along the "Birdfeeder Trail" at the Lynde Shores Conservation Area, many will readily come up to you expecting a treat. Many visitors, especially young children with their mothers, are happy to oblige them.
