Plönlein in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

I first discovered Rothenburg on my 1986 trip to Germany. I was visiting the Fränkische Schweiz region north of Nürnberg and I wanted to drive to Heidelberg, but not all in one day. When studying the Michelin map and red hotel guide, I noticed Rothenburg. The map in the hotel guide showed the stone wall surrounding the town, and I decided that it was probably a good place to spend the night.

What I found really impressed me! Although crawling with tourists, I found a really delightful old town. In the evening, most of the tourists leave and you can easily wander through the town and explore its nooks and crannies. Now, all of the wall has been restored, with the help of donations from around the world, and you can walk along the top of most of it.

One of my favorite spots is the park at the western end of the town. This park overlooks the Tauber valley.

This picture shows a couple of towers of the older town wall. This spot is called the Plönlein.

The road to the north leads to Würzburg. To the south is Dinkelsbühl.
